Welcome to Kalya Coffee

From Kenya to York: The Story Behind Kalya Coffee York

An introduction to our founder, Bea Kalya

There are places that shape you quietly.

For me, that place was Kenya.

I was born where coffee grows in red earth beneath wide skies where mornings begin early and strength is measured not in noise, but in resilience. Coffee was never just a drink. It was work, community, dignity. It was women rising before dawn, tending fields, carrying harvests, holding families together.

The highlands that shaped those beans shaped me too.

Years later, life brought me to York. A different landscape. A different rhythm. Yet something within me remained rooted in where I began. I often found myself reflecting on the hands behind the harvest the growers whose labour rarely carries a name, whose stories are seldom told beyond origin labels.

Kalya Coffee was born from that reflection.

It began not as a business idea, but as a bridge between Kenya and York, between heritage and refinement, between memory and intention.

I wanted to create something that honoured origin without turning it into ornament. A brand that carried dignity. That recognised the women whose work sustains farms and communities. That treated coffee and tea not as commodities, but as cultural and human connections.

Kalya is rooted in responsibility.

We source thoughtfully. We roast with care. We design with restraint. Every detail from our Kenyan-inspired pattern band to the quiet strength of our packaging — reflects where we come from.

Luxury, to me, is not excess. It is intention.

It is knowing who grew what you drink. It is valuing craft. It is understanding that every cup connects land, labour, and home.

Kalya Coffee York exists because I believe heritage deserves refinement and refinement must honour heritage.

This is only the beginning of the journey. As we grow, so will our partnerships, our impact, and our commitment to the women who inspired this brand in the first place.

From my home in York to yours, thank you for being here.

Rooted in Kenya. Refined in York.
